Saving The Haribon

Haribon is a shortened term for 'Haring Ibon' which refers to the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi). This majestic bird is the largest bird in the world as reported in this article ,which gives out detailed measurement in comparison to other eagles from other countries.

Haring Ibon tops in 5 of the 7 external measurements:Total length, bill gape, culmen, bill height and tarsus.
In 1995, thru Proclamation No. 615 , the Philippine eagle became the National Bird, replacing the Black-headed Munia or the Philippine Maya.

Sadly there are reportedly around 400 pairs of wild eagles in the Philippines which makes them critically endangered. Even as early as the 1960s,the world was alerted that the eagles were in serious danger of extinction.

The main culprit is the disappearance of the rainforest which is their primary shelter in addition to continuous irresponsible poaching.

Though there is the Republic Act 9147 to punish those who harm and kill these birds, we also need to do our part in supporting and saving our national treasure. You can support by spreading awareness and concern to others.  There are several existing organizations that aid the conservation of the Philippine Eagles such as :

When you go to Davao, please take time to personally see the Philippine Eagles. You can view them at the Philippine Eagle Center, where it houses 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are captive-bred.

The Center is about an hour drive from the city and can be reached either by private or public transport. Buses going to Calinan depart every 15 minutes from the Annil Terminal located at corner Quirino and San Pedro Extension. Bus fare is at P30. From Calinan, take a pedicab going to the PEC.

The place only charges P30-P50 for admission. Scheduled lectures and tours are offered not only on the eagles but also other birds that reside in the area.

Before I left for Manila, I had the opportunity to see these eagles. They are truly large in stature especially as the fly from tree to tree.  It would be a shame to think that our National Bird would be extinct if we do not do enough to help them survive.
